3 Sure Ways to Drive New Business part 3

Once you have determined what we want people to say about your business and determined where it needs to be said it may seem as if you are ready to just go for it. However there is one more element that most business people overlook, and that’s the frequency of the message.

Final step: Say it until they believe you!

The cost of marketing has to take into account how frequently the message needs to be repeated. Most people are unaware that most messages take at least 9 times visually, 7 times audibly, and 3 times using both audio and video to stick in a persons mind.

This is why our marketing must be put onto a highly visible platforms using highly captivating messaging. Most people charge a very significant amount of money to get great placing. Think of the millions spent on commercials for the Super Bowl. 3 Sure Ways to Drive New Business part 2

Once you know what you want people to say about you, you must discover how you want them to say it. When the negative health effects of Coca-Cola or McDonald’s are rumored far and wide they don’t start slowing down production or shutting down franchises. They overwhelm their target markets with a positive message that makes irrelevant the negative messaging that people have shared. So targeting and controlling messaging is the keystone to any effective business yet few people actually think through this process.

Therefore second step in driving business to your door is: Determine where and to whom you want your message to be said!

To gain new business, smaller businesses almost exclusively rely upon direct marketing, foot traffic, or most importantly word of mouth. In order to get your message out we have to determine who are the most likely candidates to buy and tell more people about your product or service. This is called a target audience. The more defined our target audience, the more effective we can prepare our message. So if you are selling furniture it’s not enough to say, ” I am targeting people with homes.” It has to be a 27 year old newly wed named Jan, who lives in a the first tear suburbs buying her first house with her husband Jack. Then you focus on what Jan likes, where she goes, and how she makes decisions and place your marketing and tailor your messaging to Jan and place it where Jan goes.

Powerful insights about your marketing message:

First you don’t control the message! Once it leaves you, you must rely on other to pass it on. Think about how it will be received and try to anticipate how it will be repeated.

Second the stickiness of the message determines if it dies after impact or continues to move forward after first impact.

Experience Leadership works with entrepreneurs, small to medium size businesses in defining and promoting your message through coaching and training.

3 Sure ways to Drive New Business part 1

There are only one of two reasons why people don’t buy from you.

1. They don’t know you exist or 2. What they know hasn’t convinced them to buy.

So here’s what we need to do if we are going to succeed in driving business to our door step!

First Rule of 3: Design what you want people to say about you.

First of all, what do you do? Who do you serve? Where do you serve them? What value does your product or service bring. This may sound over simplistic but most people try to do to much. To gain more customers determine who specifically you are, what specifically you do, where specifically you will add the most value.

Think about it, if I asked you to tell me all the white things in the world how many could you count in 15 seconds… go ahead and try it.

Now if I asked you how many white things there are in your refrigerator in 15 seconds how would you do?

Chances are you came up with more white things in your refrigerator or at least they came to your mind faster because specificity and focus drives results. The biggest mistake in most businesses is that they try to go for the every person and believe that everyone is a customer. However it’s in that lack of focus that we loose power. Think about the sun, and it’s incredible heat and power; people sit all day in front of it with no fear for their life. Yet a laser that doesn’t have a fraction of the sun’s power destroys cuts through diamonds. The point is if you want to be successful you will need focus. Fight with Passion, But Be Sure to AIM

There are no clear winners when it comes to those who die fighting for noble ambitions yet this is a tradition that has lasted for millennia. Young men in the name of honor go out to defend their country, tribe, family, or love risk their lives, marching into war, many times valiantly not realizing that they will never be seen again. It was in the “fox holes” where many came to grip with their mortality. Stories have been told and retold of those who became heroes due to commitments made through “fox hole conversions.”

Many don’t see the value of life until it’s almost gone. Young people feeling alive and invincible were historically thrilled to engage in war, dueling, and more recently in the 60?s and 70?s “playing chicken” with automobiles. It is without a doubt that many who come close to death eventually become experts on life.

My challenge to you, live now! As Tim McGraw would put it, go skydiving, rocky mountain climbing, love deeper and live sweeter. If we stay busy trying to get somewhere it will be too late before we realize that the elusive destination never truly existed and we have wasted life looking for it.

Live Now! Go slow when you eat, sniff the air, feel the pleasure of wind on your face. Work to make a difference, take a vacation with your family, but by all means, LIVE NOW!!!

Entering the Danger

Every business, church, and non-profit leader has the chance to be great in their own environment yet few take the leap. After being in leadership positions for two decades as well as training tens of thousands of leaders over the last ten years I have come to the conclusion that the leap is not easy but it is simple. A leader must have the internal fortitude to engage people as a leader.

Most leaders I meet excel at their skill and make correct decisions 90-95% of the time; and this is the problem. The fact that these leaders are “generally correct;” they lack the insight to see their blind spots. This is when they need to enter into a process that engages a leadership coach or mentor, you colleagues, and even your employees to get good feedback. The humility to ask and the willingness to listen will give you the potential increase credibility faster then almost anything else.

Then next step is to closely reflect on what people have said and identify books and resources that will empower you in the areas identified as crucial to change. It takes true strength to enter the danger but it is the one thing that separate those who want to become great from everyone else. Strong leaders can be vulnerable and at times show weakness on the outside because they are core and strong on the inside. Weak leaders, feeling weak and insecure on the inside are then forced to use aggression and force on the outside. These brute tactics work in the short term but lack long term relational capital. Great leaders emerge from a place of self and social awareness that are strong enough to lead and humble enough to listen.

Only the Hungry Survive

In the face of danger it is amazing how creative living creatures can become. Ingenuity comes to life when contentment is removed. The drive to stay alive can create a powerful force that demands change. Abraham Maslow shared the insight that, ” the satisfied need does not motivate.” In order to stay truly motivated we must never be completely satisfied. Satisfaction can lead to complacency, complacency leads to apathy, and apathy to atrophy where we loose our capacity to continue creating.

The tension created by the cycle of hunger, stimulation, love, and adventure all point back to the fact that we need to continue to pursue them to ensure growth. Could you imagine if the first time we experienced the joy of a full belly, the thrill of a roller coaster, or the passion of making love: that we completely lost the appetite for them? The satisfaction is temporary and we learn the power of fulfillment, then the tension begins again. This tension drives our creative nature to continue to pursue more of this experience with passion and our progress can escalate into powerful victories.

It appears that in every natural cycle we find a way to fill our appetites to satisfaction, but when it comes to our desire to win we compromise in order to fit in and gain acceptance from our peers. If there is one consistent element to achieving one’s dream it is not just to have the will to survive but also the will to win.

You’re Stuck Because You Want to Be!

Let’s take a moment to assess why it is we have yet to succeed in all of our endeavors. If we would be honest we would discover we are where we are in life because that is exactly where we really want to be. We go along in life suffering through mediocrity because we’ve allowed the world to dictate when we sit, where we stand, and how often we eat. We have been outer-directed: looking to a job, position, or popularity to determine our level of success. We get the results we get because our life is designed to get those results. If you want to change the results you get in life, you have to gain the courage and faith to change the way your life is designed. As Jim Rohn said, don’t wish things were easier, wish you were better. If the bar of success was easy, everyone would attain. We can’t wait on it to come to us, we must grow ourselves.

STOP HOPING!!! Succes will not come to you; you must go get it. You must do the radical work of reinventing yourself to have the courage to do what everyone else says is too risky. Seth Godin in his book The Purple Cow reveals that from first grade we are taught to conform to what is popular, to color inside the lines. Well stop listening to the voice of normal and get bold. Stop making excuses. Ready to go the next level? Step up, encourage yourself, and get busy. DO IT NOW!!!

Unaffected

Rejection is the strongest human impulse, so says philosopher theologian Dallas Willard. Think about how we succumb to peer pressure as a kid, we lie to parents about our schooling, and we grow up to put on the best face for our first date. If we would deeply reflect and consider the choices we make on a consistent basis we would see that many of them have been modified to avoid rejection. This madness must stop! We must eliminate the power other people’s opinions have had over our lives and do the work that we need to engineer our own success.

Jeff Olson in his book The Slight Edge says that the average person will have about 250 people at their funeral and many will be kids who don’t know why they are there. If we are honest the people that really matter in our lives are very few and we need to gain the internal strength and emotional fortitude to not give a rip what other are thinking about us and go achieve the success our souls long for. We have to stop pussy footing around to please people that won’t life a finger to help us.

Put on your strong face, be bold, be brave be Unaffected!

Unleashing the Power of Francis

Today a new Pope was introduced to the world, he was selected by 115 cardinals who felt that this institution symbolized by power since the days of Emperor Constantine needed a face lift. Now in full disclosure I am not Roman Catholic but as a person of faith who follows the Christian tradition I am deeply moved. As one of three sovereign cities in the world, Vatican city has its own laws and leadership and has been perceived as aloof and out of touch with the rest of the world, but that all ended today.

The new Papa is the first Latin American Pope who chooses to live in an apartment while rather than a luxurious house, refusing the traditional limo of the archbishop, opted for public transportation. Following in the order of the Jesuits, the holy father looks for ways develop community and to see Christ in the faces of the poor, sick, and forgotten. In the order of the Latin American theology of Liberation he ask questions before emphasizing doctrine. In the order of his chosen name St. Francis he “preaches the gospel at all times, when necessary, use words.”

Pope Francis personifies the leadership of Christ. One of the last request Christ made to his disciples before being executed was that they pray for Him. In a genuine act of humility he asked the people to pray for me. This quality is the reason all religions respect Jesus. The Pope refuses to adopt the practices of holding on to power which is why many people who like Jesus reject the church. The irony is not lost today on the fact that the person who holds the most powerful religious position for the last 17 Centuries is servant to the least.
